About the Royal Sovereign Stakes

The Royal Sovereign Stakes is a Group 2 race for three year old colts and geldings, taking place each year at Warwick Farm Racecourse under set weights plus penalty conditions. Held in February as part of the growing Sydney autumn racing carnival, this event is run over a distance of 1200 metres for $175,000 in prize money.

The Royal Sovereign Stakes takes place on the same day as the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes and Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes. It is a popular event that normally manages to attract horses who are on their way to bigger races during the autumn months. Some of the quality horses who have won this event include Lonhro in 2002, Guineas in 1998, Danewin in 1995, and Shaftesbury Avenue in 1990.

This event has been won in recent years by El Cambio in 2008, Youthful Jack in 2009, Shoot Out in 2010, Master Harry in 2011, and Hot Snitzel in 2012. Hot Snitzel won the 2012 edition ahead of Manawanui in second place and Moment Of Change in third.

The Royal Sovereign Stakes is traditionally the autumn starting point for three year old sprinters, with little or no lead up races for punters to consider. While some horses will come from handicap and listed races in the weeks leading up to this event, there are no definite indicators to keep your eyes on. After racing in the Royal Sovereign Stakes, horses may go towards events like the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill or the Group 1 Randwick Guineas at Randwick.

The Royal Sovereign Stakes began back in 1979, originally as a Listed event. It was not held in 1980 and graduated to a Group 3 race the next year in 1981. The Royal Sovereign Stakes was elevated to its current status as a Group 2 race in 1996, with Catalan Opening enjoying the first victory under the new status.
